With Texas A&M Head Coach Kevin Sumlin already looking for a new defensive co-ordinator to replace the fired Mark Snyder. He may be looking for a new offensive co-ordinator as well as Mark Berman of FOX26 in Houston is reporting that Jake Spavital has been interviewed for the vacant Head Coach job at Tulsa.
If Spavital was to leave Texas A&M he’d be the second Aggies offensive co-ordinator to leave College Station for a head coaching job in two years after Kliff Kingsbury left to take over Texas Tech. The Aggies offense continued to be impressive after Spavital took over in 2013 although did struggle at times this year, including being shut out by Alabama.
Tulsa endured a horrid 2-10 season in the AAC this year managing to beat Tulane and SMU. Bruce Feldman reported that Oregon offensive co-ordinator Scott Frost and Utah State coach Matt Wells are also being interviewed so it is far from certain that Jake Spavital is leaving the Aggies.
In other news, Jake Spavital was reported to have phoned Dana Holgorsen who is the head coach at West Virginia (who the Aggies play in the Liberty Bowl on the 29th December). Apparently he said “I know all your signals” and then hung up which Holgorsen responded to on Twitter by joking that he taught Spavital all his signals anyways. Jake Spavital worked under Dana Holgorsen previously and oddly enough Holgorson worked for Kevin Sumlin when he was at Houston, that is how familiar the staffs at the two teams are.
The light-hearted jokes between the two continued in the form of internet memes but you know both these two will be desperate to get a win to finish the season and take the bragging rights. The game certainly promises to be a shootout between two teams with potent offences and mediocre defences.
