While there is still an abundance of quality MMA left in 2014, one can’t help but to look ahead to the events already announced for 2015. Let’s be honest, that’s part of the charm of Mixed Martial Arts, it’s a sport that always gives fans something to look forward to. But what really lies ahead for the enthusiastic MMA fans all over the world when it comes to pay per views and the inflated price that is assigned to some of the events? For example, UFC 182 is the event that will kick off the New Year featuring an electrifying Main Event between the greatest pound for pound champion, Jon Jones and worthy challenger Daniel Cormier, but in the same month, there is also UFC 183 which features Anderson Silva, the greatest of all time fighting Nick Diaz who hasn’t won a fight since October 11, 2011.
And there is the issue at hand. As fans of MMA should we pay the same price for an event that features a highly competitive fight on paper or a fight that features names that, “push the needle”? There was a time when I believed that Dana White was great for the sport of MMA, but now I’m not too certain. Sure, he’s brash and bold like a promoter should be but has his love affair with boxing mixed with his ideals for the UFC too much? There are some who argue that a great amount of MMA is a bad thing and while I disagree, there’s something to that which holds true. In boxing there are mega fights, but sometimes it gives us lopsided Main Events to showcase a young up and comer or a super star that everyone pays top dollar to see. However, there is an infecting darkness about boxing called greed. Thankfully, I don’t think that this darkness exists in the UFC, but if the World’s biggest promotion continues to ask it’s fans to pay the same amount of money for pay per views that feature competitive fights as opposed to fights that feature, “needle pushers” will greed overcome a sport that is still pure and growing more powerful every year? As someone who values a dollar it’s concerning for a consumer to see that the UFC looks at every penny they charge differently which is clearly the message they are sending by their first two pay per views of 2015.
