42-year-old goaltender Martin Brodeur is not ready to hang up the skates on his storied career just yet as he has agreed to join the St. Louis Blues on a tryout basis starting Friday.
Brian Elliott, the Blues starting netminder, was injured in the second period of last night’s game against the Ottawa Senators and has been listed by head coach Ken Hitchcock as “week-to-week.” Backup rookie goalie Jake Allen will assume the number one role in St. Louis, but Brodeur could possibly suit up wearing the Blue Note if he proves to the team that he still has what it takes to start in between the pipes in the National Hockey League.
Blues General Manager Doug Armstrong recently recalled goaltender Jordan Binnington from their American Hockey League affiliate (the Chicago Wolves) under emergency conditions in lieu of Elliott’s ailment.
Brodeur has spent his entire 21-year career with the New Jersey Devils, amassing several NHL records including most regular season wins (688), most regular season shutouts (124), and most 40-win seasons (8). After first testing the free agent market on June 7th of this year, he had yet to sign with a team which lead most to believe that retirement was inevitable for the Montreal native.
