LWSC Rants: Qatar World Cup in 2022 is the Worst Idea Ever

Why on earth are we doing playing World Cup 2022 in Qatar… still?

I’ve never been to Qatar before. I’m sure it’s a nice place to live, work, as well as visit. I’m not saying that it’s a terrible place in general, but the fact that the World Cup is still being scheduled to be played in Qatar is so incredibly disastrous of an idea. Swimming in shark infested waters wearing a blood soaked and lightly seasoned suit seems like such a better idea.

I mean seriously?

We’re going to have World Cup 2022 in a place mired with issues of unpaid workers and oppression?

Nothing makes everyone feel good about the price for admission quite like knowing their seats were put together by workers whom allegedly never received proper payment or decent and humane working conditions. Great marketing!

Also, adding to the charm of it all, is the fact that bribery reports (#1, #2, #3) have and apparently will continue to surface about their World Cup bid. Which should not only sweeten your feelings about the unpaid worker allegations, as well as serve as the metaphorical autographed portrait of a middle finger sent with care to the other would-be host nations whom (I can only assume) didn’t offer a big enough bribe to win them over.

If you’re still on the fence, please consider that Qatar’s daily summer temperatures are 104 F and up. This means, the only way that World Cup 2022 could be played in Qatar would be if it is staged in a different time of the year than it has ever been held.

Basically in order to have World Cup 2022 in the place that purchased its right and is allegedly employing slave labor to build it, they would have to hold the tournament at a different time than it has ever been held. They would do this in order to keep people (both spectators and players) from dying of heat stroke.

Yes, this place is a better option than the United States (a nation with more stadiums than most others), Australia (the place with one of the better world economies in the world), South Korea (generally peaceful place with rich cool history), and Japan (a country with respected sports history and the actual logical ability to put on this tournament).

This stinks of conspiracy and nefarious dealings, and at this point the only good decision that should be made is literally in favor of any of the other possible choices.

Unfortunately, The organizers of Qatar’s bid already have their receipt.

Money won’t buy happiness, but apparently it does buy World Cups hosting rights and terrible ideas.
