Red Bull Brazilian Grand Prix Review: Ricciardo Retirement

After a run of 15 races in the points, Daniel Ricciardo’s excellent points streak ended abruptly at the Brazilian Grand Prix following a suspension failure. Meanwhile, Sebastian Vettel’s penultimate race with Red Bull got off to a slow start, but ended with a pretty solid result. Both however, were worryingly beaten convincingly by Jenson Button’s Mercedes-powered McLaren. Both will want to end the season on a high at the super-duper-ultra-exciting-fantastically-amazing double points finale at Abu Dhabi.

Red Bull Brazilian Grand Prix Review

No. 1 Sebastian Vettel (GER)

Grid: P6

Race: P5

Vettel outqualified his team mate for the first time since the Italian Grand Prix and was very cautious in the opening stages of the race, recalling how he nearly lost the title in 2012 as he went wide at turn 4 early on. He made his way back through the field though and put a bold move on Kimi Räikkönen, the man he is set to join at Ferrari next year. Ultimately, Vettel ended up fifth behind Felipe Massa and Jenson Button, but ahead of both Ferraris. It was one of his strongest performances over a weekend all year as he outperformed and outqualified his team mate, something which he hasn’t done that frequently in 2014.

No. 3 Daniel Ricciardo (AUS)

Grid: P9

Race: Retired on lap 39 (Suspension)

This really wasn’t Ricciardo’s best weekend. He never really looked to be on par with Vettel all weekend and that was evident in qualifying as he was outqualified for the first time since Italy. Despite Vettel’s early mistake Ricciardo wasn’t able to capitalise and he was running behind his team mate when a front-left wishbone failed on his car, bringing him to only his second retirement this season. Despite all this, he secured third in the championship, a truly brilliant achievement in a car which is definitely not on par with the Mercedes and on a number of occasions – the Williams and Ferrari cars as well.
