With the World Constructors’ Championship sewn up in Russia, the Mercedes AMG Petronas team can afford to relax and enjoy the fight for the World Drivers’ Championship between Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton in the final three races. With 100 points up for grabs at the Circuit of the Americas, Interlagos in Brazil and the Yas Marina Circuit of Abu Dhabi, three men can mathematically win the title but, realistically, it is just between the Silver Arrows drivers.
Round 17 of this year’s championship is set to provide fans with another thriller from the COTA, due to the long start/finish and back straights which provide some great overtaking opportunities and the interesting uphill turn one.
The new Constructors’ champions didn’t have the best of races last year in the USA; Hamilton qualified fifth while Rosberg struggled down in 14th position. Both drivers had good starts and by turn two the Brit was in a podium position, but was quickly put in his place by Mark Webber a few laps later. Lewis was stuck in fourth for the rest of the race while Nico got his Mercedes up into ninth place by the chequered flag.
In 2012 Hamilton took an impressive victory at this track in a spectacular battle with Sebastian Vettel, meaning he could have the edge this weekend over his team mate who came home in 13th two years ago and has never stood on the podium in Texas.
Having won all but three races this season can the Silver Arrows take yet another victory in America? Can Rosberg stop Hamilton’s winning streak and get himself back in the fight for the Driver’s Championship?
