New York Rangers defenseman Dan Boyle suffered a broken hand during the team’s opening night contest against the St. Louis Blues Thursday night. After blocking a shot in the second period, the 38-year-old free agent acquisition left the game and didn’t return. Early reports indicate Boyle will be out of action for four to six weeks. The Rangers went on to win the game 3-2.

Boyle was signed to a two-year $9 million deal as an unrestricted free agent by the New York Rangers on July 1st, 2014, and was expected to be a top four blueliner for the club, and to quarterback the powerplay. Boyle had 12 goals and 36 points for the San Jose Sharks last season.
This injury comes on top of a broken leg suffered by Rangers first line centre Derek Stepan, as New York finds itself down two key pieces early in the NHL season.
The Rangers have recalled defenceman Mike Kostka from the AHL’s Connecticut Whale to replace Boyle in the lineup. Kostka had one assist in four pre-season games with the Rangers.
