This is a very busy week for me. It is also one of my favorite times of the year. It is Fire Prevention week!! I work with several people to go out to schools in my community and teach children how to prevent fires and what to do if there is a fire. I was blessed to have two guy , Jim Startzel and Terry Smith, allow me to join them in the yearly ritual of putting a full out stage show on for each school. The message is always the key to the show; however we make sure that the kids (and us) have fun with it. Terry would rival any mascot out there. He is a very large Dalmatian named Helmet. Jim is always a new character. He manages to transform himself into whatever character we need. Let’s just say he has been a Pirate, magician, a not so super super hero, and a salesman just to name a few.
We work our skits around the topics of fire prevention. We teach the students; Stop, Drop, and, Roll, Exit drills, Stay low and go, 911, test your smoke detector and what a firefighter looks and sounds like. I have a very important job every day I go to work. Teaching these lessons may be the most important one! I will never know for sure if or how many fires are prevented from the shows we do. I truly think it may be more than I can imagine.
Before you move on to the important things in this article, I want you to test your smoke detector! It can save your life. Also, wear your seatbelt the next time you get in a car!
We are now in week 6. Many leagues have their trade deadlines fast approaching. You also now have a good idea of where your team stands. If you are sitting at 2-3 or worse it is time to make a move. The farther you are out of the playoffs the more risk you should take to try to improve your team. This is where you want to go after those underperforming players in hopes they turn it around. It is time to risk a lot to try to gain a lot. My fantasy picks this week are players that have a high ceiling compared to their current value. They have the ability to go off and get you back in the playoff hunt.
Fantasy Picks
QBs
Cam Newton – He has had a very slow start to the season. When I say that I mean he has been very slow to get out of the pocket and take off. He did take off 6 times last week, although only for 9 yards. He may come at a value and return to that top 5 QB range.
Eli Manning – You may not even need to trade for Eli, as he is owned in only 57.4% of ESPN leagues. If you are in a 2 QB league or deeper league Eli is showing that he may be able to supersede any of his past fantasy performances. He is currently less than a point behind his best points per game average for a season. That is with a week 1 that had only 6 points.
Drew Brees – No one should be scared off of Brees yet. There are still some owners that are scared right now. If that Brees owner is in your league, offer up a trade. Brees has had turnover problems this year. Brees should still be considered one of the top three QBs in the league.
RBs
LeSean McCoy – Yes, I still believe. At some point the line will be healthier. The Chip Kelly Offense is tailor made for McCoy. He had a better rushing game this week. However, the fantasy points were still not good. Offer up a trade to McCoy’s owner. He may be frustrated enough to take it.
Knile Davis, Carlos Hyde, Biship Sankey – These backups all have a high ceiling if a spot opens up for them. This is a big risk to take, but if they come cheap it is worth the gamble. Remember, it is time to take a risk if you are 2-3 or worse.
WR
Calvin Johnson – He has scored 1 fantasy point in the last two weeks and it looks like he will miss at least one more. This may have his owner looking to dump this first round drag on his team. If Calvin can get healthy, he will make you happy.
Larry Fitzgerald – The fact that he is owned in only 60% of ESPN leagues tells you where opinions are on Fitzgerald. I do not think he will return to his glory years. He could regain enough to be a solid WR2 for your team. He is worth a look if you are thin at WR.
TE
Vernon Davis – To be up front with everyone, Vernon Davis has been that player I always like more than everyone else. Davis had a great week one and I was on top of the world. Now he has been less than 100% since. You may get Davis at a much discounted price right now. I would trade for him if I did not own him in just about every league. (I hope he gets healthy)
Larry Donnell – This is a great week to try to acquire Donnell. He is coming off a 0 point week after a career day two weeks ago. First, he may be available as he is owned in less than 50% of leagues. If he is owned, that owner may be willing to part with him thinking he was a one hit wonder. You however know that he was targeted consistently until last week. You also know that the Giants offense is looking much better than where it started.
