Thursday's Fantasy Takeaways

After watching another blowout Thursday Night Football game, I came away with the following thoughts:

Vikings

Christian Ponder is Awful

I mean he is a just a dreadful quarterback. I can’t believe that he was ever taken in the first round.  He single-handedly lost the game for the Vikings last night with back-to-back interceptions, which made the game out of reach before half.  He drags down the stock of all other Vikings players. If Ponder starts another professional football game, I will not be starting any Viking players.

Matt Asiata is a top 20 RB.

Despite Ponders best efforts to lose the game, I was still impressed with Asiata’s stat line.  He had 15 Carries for 72 yards (4.8 YPC).  Asiata did have a fumble, but there were slick conditions in Lambeau, and I don’t view him as fumble prone. He only scored 5.2, but you have to figure that he will get more carries in a game that his team is not down 28 points.  Even though it is a “running back by committee” approach, Thursday night assured me that Asiata is the lead back, with McKinnon only getting 7 carries. Look for Asiata to continue to be a top 20 RB this season, as long as Ponder doesn’t see the field again.

Cordarrelle Patterson is unreliable.

Once again, the Ponder factor is something to consider. However, since his 18 point Week 1 performance, Patterson has scored a total of 15.6 Fantasy points including last night’s affair. There is no doubt about Patterson’s talent, however his unpredictable usage makes me weary and uncomfortable starting. He will have some big games, but who knows when?

Packers

Aaron Rodgers is a bad man.

After telling Packers Nation to R-E-L-A-X in his southern California drawl, Rodgers has thrown seven touchdowns.  I am facing Aaron Rodgers this week, and I was happy to see him not play in the 4th quarter. Sometimes Rodgers is just too bad for his own good. After a slow start, Rodgers owners shouldn’t have any worries moving forward.

Eddie Lacy is Jerome Bettis 2.0

Eddie Lacy is listed at 229 pounds.  Yeah right, he looked closer to 250 last night. After a slow start, Lacy had his first 100 yard rushing game, along with two touchdowns.  He was running hard, and finally gave some assurance to fantasy owners who spent a top pick on him in this year’s draft.

Jordy Nelson is a stud.

He only needed one catch to make his fantasy presence felt.  He took that one catch for 66 yards and touchdown.  I don’t think Nelson gets enough credit for being the elite receiver that he is.  This game shows you that Jordy isn’t volume dependent and can produce big time fantasy points with just a single opportunity.
