The hammer was thrown down by the Nevada State Athletic Commission today on Wanderlei Silva for running away from a drug test.
The commission agreed on a life time ban for Silva, as well as a $70,000 fine for the Pride legend.
Nevada Attorney General Chris Eccles push for a lifetime ban of Wanderlei Silva, with the commission agreeing that Wanderlei needed to be punished harshly. Some commissioners believed that running from a drug test was even worse than being caught for performance enhancers.
Silva was set to face Chael Sonnen at UFC 175 before bowing out of the fight. It was later revealed that Silva fled his gym in May after a drug tester from the Nevada State Athletic Commission showed up at the front door.
Silva’s fine of $70,000 was based on 35% of his $200,000 fight purse. Commissioner Anthony Marnell didn’t hold back on the severity of Silva’s actions. “This may be too harsh, but I think it should be 100 percent, meaning a $200,000 fine,” Marnell said.
Wanderlei Silva recently announced his retirement from MMA competition.
