Drake opens PFL play in hopes of title, playoff birth
The Drake Bulldogs won back to back Pioneer Football League Titles in 2011 and 2012 and look to go for their third in four years when they take on Marist this Saturday at Drake Stadium.
If Drake does win the conference title this season, it will mean a little more this year than it did back then. With a new FCS Playoff Format that actually came into effect last year, Drake would earn it’s first bid to the Playoffs ever.
The road to the playoffs start this week against Marist (0-3, 0-0 PFL) as both teams play in their conference opener.
Tight Ends will play a big role in today’s game as they have accounted for 69% of Drakes receptions this year and 74% of their receiving yards. Junior, Eric Saubert (6-4 242 lbs) will be starting at TE today.
Another Position to look for will be at the Mike Linebacker in John Hugunin. One of the team captains, Hugunin is 8th in the nation in tackles per game – he’s averaging 11.7 right now.
All we can say is that it’s going to be a fun game in Des Moines today, and hopefully an even better season for Drake Bulldogs fans.
