The Philadelphia Flyers announced this Friday that forward Claude Giroux had sustained an injury and will require approximately two weeks to recover. The story has been confirmed by TSN and by Flyers GM Ron Hextall.
The injury occurred during an on-ice session at camp but is not a re-occurring injury, nor is it something that happened during the off-season that has come back.
“This just happened (Friday). It’s the first day of camp and guys go 100 miles per-hour and things happen,” said Hextall. “Obviously its not the way you want to start. That’s the hand we were dealt and we’re going to deal with it.”
Report: Claude Giroux Injury- Out 2 Weeks
This will be the second time the Flyers star is injured during the off-season. Last year, Giroux suffered a finger injury during a golfing incident, requiring surgery. This time around, Giroux will not miss an efficient amount of time, barring any set-backs.
The injury announcement comes just one day after Pittsburgh Penguins star forwards Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, as well as Columbus Blue Jackets forward Nathan Horton, all went down to injury. While Crosby is back on the ice, much like Giroux, Horton’s timeline is a little less certain at this time. The Flyers could also be without the services of defenseman Kimmo Timmonen after he announced that the chance of his return this season is “slim”.
The Flyers pre-season starts next Monday when they kick things off against the Toronto Maple Leafs in London, Ontario. The official season doesn’t start until October 8th, when the Flyers visit the Boston Bruins. By that time, Claude Giroux is expected in the line-up.
