On Thursday morning, Major League Soccer unveiled their new brand identity that will come into effect for the 2015 season. The new logo and brand identity, known as “MLS NEXT”, will be present in the new FIFA 15 video game, set to be released on September 23 in North America. The new logo will be phased in at various points in real life, such as the SuperDraft and Jersey Week, in the lead up to First Kick 2015. The old MLS logo will remain in use until the end of the 2014 season.
The new logo is a significant departure from the “boot and ball” logo that the league has used in various forms since 1994, two years before a ball was kicked. The new logo has a clear focus on minimalism, but features subtle symbols such as the three stars representing club, country, and community.
The biggest feature of MLS’s new logo is its customizability. Each of the league’s 21 teams will adorn the logo on each sleeve of their jerseys, but each logo will feature the same colours as the team wearing it. So while the league’s logo will feature red, white, and blue, Orlando’s club-specific logo for example will be purple, white, and yellow.
