Iowa State came out victorious in the “State of Iowa Super Bowl” on Saturday when Cole Netten kicked a 42 yard field goal to win the game for the Cyclones.
The Good, the Bad, the Ugly: CyHawk Trophy Game 2014
The Good: Iowa State got their first win on Saturday, that should fall under this category right? After starting the season 0-2, beating Iowa was a huge step forward on Iowa State’s already tough schedule. Sam Richardson is finally becoming the confident passing quarterback that Iowa State fans have waited two years for. “SBR12” threw for 255 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. The “no interceptions” part of that is a bit shocking, since Iowa State is known for throwing them. Not to mention we saw a go-ahead drive go 92 yards to put the Cyclones up 17-14 in the fourth quarter. We also witnessed Cory Morrisey make his case for first-team Big 12 honors as he tallied seven tackles against an All-American offensive linemen. There seems to be a lot of promise still left in this team, despite starting out 1-2.
The Bad: Now, not to overshadow the win, Iowa State needs to figure out how to start games again. We saw a great start in the North Dakota State game, but that never got finished; and don’t get Cyclones fans started with that horrific first quarter against Kansas State. On Saturday, Iowa State went down 14-3 by halftime, but then really pushed themselves and only allowed three second half points. This defense will play when it needs to, they just need to play when they want to.
The Ugly: The only thing you could call ugly was DeVondrick Nealy’s fumble on Iowa’s two yardline that could have closed the gap to just 4 points at halftime. Other than that in terms of this year’s CyHawk Trophy Game, there really wasn’t that much ugly play that happened. The only thing you could say that was ugly would be no game this week for the momentum-swinging Cyclones.
Who’s Next: After the first bye week of the season (there will be another on week 9) Iowa State will try to upset #7 Baylor under the lights at Jack Trice Stadium.
