After two weeks of high drama and publicity for Formula One we are another race down with only six races remaining, it’s amazing how time flies in Formula One. However I think four drivers in particular will be looking at his late stage of the season as a turning point.
First of all, Lewis Hamilton got a win to close the gap to his team mate and he got this after putting Nico under a lot of pressure and forcing him into an error that saw Nico Rosberg miss turn 1 and go straight on. It was a small case of normality coming back after two races where Mercedes haven’t won, they got a one-two and all attention will now be on how Rosberg handles the pressure. Can Rosberg bounce back to win under the lights in Singapore or is this really a turning point for Hamilton where he, for once, carries the momentum he has over to the next round and applies even more pressure to his team-mate.
A podium! No one will be more relived then Felipe Massa after a really tough 2/3rds of the season it finally looks like things be on the up. You have to love the ironic side of Formula One at times, Massa getting his first podium of the year at a place famous for Ferrari and their passionate fans and really showing what a great move that was because Fernando Alonso retired and Kimi Räikkönen got just two points. You could of course wonder what would have happened if team mate Bottas didn’t get such a bad start but in F1 everything happens for a reason and this could really be a turning point. Felipe Massa really is a confidence driver therefore one good results could send him on a run of three or four very good results, even at Singapore where Williams don’t expect to be very strong but then again it’s Singapore, anything could happen and has happened in the past, just ask Felipe Massa.
Sebastian Vettel has got to be leaving the place he’s had a lot of good memories at thinking something’s got to give. You would think over half way in the season now a team as capable as Red Bull Racing would be able to tell a good strategy from a bad one but in their four times world champion’s case clearly not. It’s no good Helmut Marko saying we know it was a mistake after the race, Vettel has once again been beaten by his team mate and it’s the team to blame. Surely he is starting to see it’s not working there anymore and its shame because they’ve won four world constructors title because of him and him alone in two of the cases and they don’t appear to be treating him like that. So is this the turning point for Sebastian when he says enough is enough and he wants out of Red Bull Racing.
Another driver that stood out from the Monza race was Sergio Perez, Force India, sticking to tradition came quite anonymous during the middle of the season but they were back with a bang in Monza. He was involved in a massive battle with the two McLaren’s, mainly Jenson Button who he had an epic battle with and they fought very hard right to the end of the race. While his team mate who is rated so highly within the F1 community was struggling with car damage out of the points Perez was on hand and on form to remind us all how good Force India can be when they get hooked up perfectly. I hope Perez takes this good results and it helps to get Force India back where should be, in the points regularly.
So another race done and dusted in the championship and for these four drivers Monza could determine the outcome of their season and even beyond.
‘In Spa I heard I had signed for £150m for three years. I was asking where the pen was but nobody came back to me’ – Sebastian Vettel. I wonder if this will turn out to be true.
