The final preseason games have come and gone, and now we await the first regular season game which airs on Thursday between the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers. Before that happens, let’s tackle what happened in the preseason showdown. Most starters took this week off while many others fought tooth and nail to be a part of the team. Players like Lache Seastrunk (RB, WAS) made impressive plays, 80 yard catch and run for a TD, that should have warranted a spot on the roster, but ultimately were axed from the team to find homes elsewhere. I guess that is why they call the NFL a business. Anyways, let’s take a look at a few guys from the final games and what it means to fantasy land.
Preseason Propaganda Week 4
Jeremy Hill, RB CIN- In the Bengals final preseason game, they saw enough from the rookie Jeremy Hill to send BenJarvus Green-Ellis packing for free agency. Although Hill did not score in the final game, he did touch the ball 26 different times and racked up 160 yards. Obviously, we must temper our enthusiasm since the total came against Colts reserve and potential practice squad employees, but you can’t deny that Hill has something special in the way that he runs. He slashes defenses with ease and plays behind a running back, Giovani Bernard, who will take the concentration away from him. If there is a running back by committee (RBBC) that you’re investing in, it should certainly be this one.
Denarius Moore/David Carr, OAK- In the first half of the Oakland/Seattle game, these two connected on three passes for 58 yards and two touchdowns, and every single reception is worth the conversation. On their first connection for the night, Seattle had their first team defense playing and Moore was draped by Richard Sherman. He managed to stick an arm out and pull in an 11 yard pass. Their first score together came later on in the first quarter. From 36 yards out, Carr connected with Moore in stride after he used his speed to create comfortable separation from the defender. This allowed Carr to deliver an on-the-spot shot for six points. In their final connection, Carr hit Moore on a beautiful back shoulder pass, good for another touchdown. If Carr can get the nod over Matt Schaub, we can find Moore on the field and in the waiver wire.
Santonio Holmes, CHI WR- The sample size here is pretty small, and the Bears did have rookie David Fales at the helm the whole game, but I thought it was worth the mention. Holmes ended up with one reception on five targets. The one reception that he was able to reel in was a stunning catch-and-run for 32 yards into the end zone. After the catch, Holmes displayed agility with a quick spin around and a spring in his step to beat a bunch of kids to the end zone. There are a lot of mouths to feed Chicago, but if he can continue to display this kind of rejuvenated and inspired ball, then Holmes could make a return to fantasy.
