Texans Trade for Ryan Mallett and Release Case Keenum

In a move that’s been rumored for months, the Houston Texans acquired quarterback Ryan Mallett via trade from the New England Patriots on Saturday. Head coach Bill O’Brien was the Patriots offensive coordinator when Mallett was drafted and has reportedly coveted the former Arkansas signal caller for some time. In return, the Patriots will receive a sixth-round draft pick.

Mallett’s arrival meant the end of the road for Texans’ backup Case Keenum, whose play was disappointing this preseason after failing to win a single start in eight games in 2013.

Keenum showed flashes during his time as a starter, but failed to develop the necessary consistency to hold a roster spot with the team. The Texans spent a 2014 fourth-round draft pick on Tom Savage and were not about to cut the rookie QB without giving him more time to develop.

As expected, Houston also went to work via the waiver wire, claiming cornerback Darryl Morris from the 49ers and offensive tackle Jeff Adams from the Titans. Morris, a San Antonio native, will immediately provide much-needed depth to the Texans’ secondary. Agent Gary Glick said that Morris is excited to be returning to his home state.

Like Morris, Jeff Adams earned an NFL roster spot as an undrafted free agent. The 24-year old bounced around several practice squads before landing with the Titans last season. He’s a 6-7 project who will provide depth at the tackle position.

This is likely only the beginning of a series of moves for the Texans. Expect them to continue to add players in the days to come.
