Flames Sign Devin Setoguchi to a One-Year Deal

The Calgary Flames have signed Devin Setoguchi to a one year deal worth $750,000. The team announced the deal via their official twitter account earlier today.

The 27-year-old Alberta native played for the Winnipeg Jets last season after being traded by the Minnesota Wild for a second round draft pick. He scored 11 goals and 16 assists for 27 points in 75 games with the Jets last season.  The Jets opted to not offer him a new contract after the season.

Devin Setoguchi was drafted in the first round, 8th overall, by the San Jose Sharks in the 2005 NHL draft. He spent the first four seasons of his NHL career with San Jose, before moving to Minnesota in the summer of 2011 as part of a deal for Brent Burns. Setoguchi would spend two seasons with the Wild, scoring 19 goals in 69 games in his first season, and 13 goals in 48 games in the lockout shortened year.

Devin Setoguchi’s best season came with the Sharks in 2008-09 when the right winger had 31 goals and 34 assists in 81 games. He spent the majority of that season playing with Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau.  Setoguchi does have two other 20 goal seasons to his credit, but has only one other season above 40 points (41 in 2010-11).

In 459 career NHL games, Setoguchi has scored 127 goals and 122 assists for 249 career points. The Flames hope that the right winger can provide some cheap secondary offence for a team that has lost Mike Cammalleri in free agency, and traded Lee Stempniak at the trade deadline last season.
