While the “mid-season” reset button has been hit in Formula One the boys at Ferrari are still playing the same old game. There are worries about straight line speed and will they be able to keep up in Belgium and again in Monza. They are worried about scoring enough points in the Constructors’ Championship to keep the Mercedes powered Williams team at bay. Williams’ drivers, Valtteri Bottas and former Ferrari driver and teammate to Fernando Alonso, Felipe Massa, should have the advantage the next couple of weeks. Not to mention the extra motivation in how badly Massa would want to stick it to Ferrari by helping Williams beat them in the Constructors’ points.
Headlines over the past week went to a 16 year old looking to make a mark in F1 next year but for Alonso and his teammate, Kimi Raikkonen, it has been business as usual for the upcoming race weekend despite all the questions regarding their young competitor to join the ranks in 2015.
Ferrari Belgian GP Preview
Spa is known to be a track for drivers and Raikkonen has had great success there in the past winning four times in Belgium but I think the bar might be set a little bit lower this weekend. The struggle between the two Ferrari cars has been well documented this season and Raikkonen has been on the short end of the stick each and every weekend. He does say that he enjoys the track as it is more of an old school track that suits his style well but the limitations of the Ferrari are going to be tough to overcome.
Alonso on the other had has seemingly been willing his F-14 chassis to the front more times than not by simply driving the crap out of it. Funnily enough though, this “driver’s track” hasn’t shown its bright light on Alonso who has yet to win there. Two second place finishes but never the bride, always the bridesmaid. On the plus side Alonso has a podium finish to ride on since we last saw formula one cars in race conditions and the way he has been muscling his car to the front every weekend as the only driver to score points in every grand prix thus far, Spa might finally shine on him Sunday.
But even with the positive spin the Ferrari team are trying to put on the weekend the focus is clear. With no major rule changes coming down the pipe for 2015 and a third place finish in the Constructors’ Championship in sight the orders are to do your best to help secure points for that third place position as well as collect as much data as possible to help the team moving forward. To gather as many useful bits for the rest of this season as well as into the next season.
