An ugly scene unfolded at Fenway Park on Wednesday night when Angels ace, Garrett Richards was carted off the field with what is being reported as a knee injury. The incident happened on a play in which Richards was attempting to cover first base in the bottom of the second inning. It appeared as if Richards’ right cleat got stuck in the dirt, initiating the injury.
With the Angels recently claiming first place in the AL West over the Oakland A’s, the team needs Richards now more than ever. A relatively unknown commodity entering this season, Richards has emerged as the Angels’ number one starter this season at the age of 26. Richards’ impressive numbers this season include a 2.61 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 164 strikeouts in 168.2 innings.
Needless to say, the Angels are hoping for the best with Richards, as his absence could spell doom for the team down the stretch in the competitive AL West. The Angels rotation has been a source of headaches throughout the year, and Richards could be the nail in the coffin. Jered Weaver is no longer the ace he once was, and CJ Wilson has been inconsistent at best. Tyler Skaggs pitched well until recently it was discovered he needs Tommy John surgery, and Hector Santiago has failed to be effective. While Matt Shoemaker has filled in admirably, it’s difficult to see a scenario in which the Angels’ rotation can be seen as a source of strength.
