2014 Currie Cup Season – Pumas

The Pumas, under the watchful eye of Coach Jimmy Stonehouse, are one of two new teams to be added to the newly formatted Currie Cup.  The format was said to be changed in order to guarantee the top six teams, within South Africa, a place in the Currie Cup tournament each year in preparation for Super Rugby.

This isn’t the first time the Pumas will be in the tournament. It has been three long years since the Pumas featured in the Currie Cup, having won the First Division title in order to progress to the Premier Division.

The main objective for the Pumas seems simple. They are looking to get the scalps of the bigger teams and show they deserved to progress to the Premier Division and ultimately stay there.

It has been too long since the Pumas last featured in this tournament, so it is difficult to predict how their own performance will play out for them. This is a completely different stage to perform on with tougher competition and far more pressure to deal with.

Pressure does funny things to teams but they can use the underdog label to their advantage. When teams underestimate the abilities of their opponents, chances are created, chances that the Pumas will look to capitalize on.
