As many know, Tottenham will be setting their sights on a top 4 finish this season. As always this will be a very challenging target to achieve, with the sides who finished around Spurs in the last campaign all strengthening significantly, it seems it may be harder than ever for “The Lilywhites” to break into the top 4 under Mauricio Pochettino.
What Lies Ahead For Tottenham
So what can we expect to lie ahead for the club now? Tottenham began the season away to West Ham at Upton park, where they were considered rather lucky to come away with all 3 points in what was a frustrating and longing afternoon due to the hosts’ resilient defending. Spurs won the game in stoppage time due to a rather fitting through ball from substitute Harry Kane which split the deference open to find a rather surprising debutante Eric Dier with the ball at his feet to calmly go round the goalkeeper and slot the ball home to set the away end alight. But what was overshadowed by a slightly worrying performance which had a handful of Spurs fans questioning, even after one game, what lies ahead.
At this moment in time the fans have absolutely nothing to worry about, okay so perhaps a couple of worrying injuries in defence leave the back line rather exposed and crippled, but the signings of young, promising and lightning quick right back DeAndre Yedlin from MLS side Seattle Sounders as well as the already fitting, composed and warming sights of Eric Dier finding his feet in his first appearance in the Premier League. Dier finds himself happily welcomed at White Hart Lane next week, where he should make his home debut against QPR, alongside already established young prospect, Ben Davies. Spurs look to continue to add to their already “Rather deep squad” with the on-going negotiations for an eye brow raising centre back Mateo Musacchio from Spanish side Villarreal for a fee believed to be around £17 million. This could be considered a rather hefty price to pay for a young defender that has no experience in what is simply the “hardest and most challenging” league of all, the Barclay’s Premier League. But for someone to have already gained the praising from many football pundits in Spain, as well as gaining the attention from Manchester United and Liverpool in the past, it’s no lie that the 23 year old has talent.
Finally, Tottenham can look forward to many things under Pochettino as he brings his quick and fluid attacking football to White Hart Lane. Spurs fans heavily desire this style of football and have seen glimpses in the first game on Saturday, with the likes of Erik Lamela looking to gain more confidence with the ball at his feet and taking on players. The defence is also looking more solid this season, hopeful that the side do not see many more results such as the 5-1 and 6-0 thrashings in the past few seasons. It seems that Pochettino is keen to bulk up the defence before maintaining what he has and bringing the best out of what is a promising looking side.
