During Cal’s second day of official training camp practice, Cedric Dozier picked off Jared Goff and started running for the end zone. But in the midst of the interception, a fight broke out.
Fight Breaks Out At Cal Football Practice
Austin Clark threw true freshman Tre Watson to the ground and other small sub-fights occurred. According to BearTerritory.net, the energy vastly picked up as the players’ intensity rose to a whole different level.
It is unknown what started the fight between these two teammates, but it is certainly an eyebrow-raiser to hear that Tre Watson was right in the middle of it. It could be just a normal and healthy fight that isn’t a big deal, or it could mean something else.
Is Watson a “loudmouth?” Is he a bad influence in the locker room? Does he disrespect veterans? I doubt it.
Sonny Dykes commented on the changed Cal Bears team after the high intensity practice.
“I think we’ve grown as a team,” Dykes said to the media. “It’s just a different feel being around these guys. They’re more invested. They care about each other more. They’re more unselfish. They’re going to have some things, from time to time, that overheat. Hopefully, we’re not going to have too many of those. It’s really just a waste of time.”
Although Dykes obviously doesn’t approve of team fights, unlike some other coaches, he did notice the defensive backs stepping up in a big way after the incident.
“I saw some guys starting to trigger the ball faster today,” said Dykes. “Stefan McClure, I thought, is starting to do some really good things at safety. Avery [Sebastian], I thought, triggered the ball, particularly late in practice, made a couple nice plays. It was good to see those guys do that.”
The California Bears open their schedule up at Northwestern on August 30th. So far in practices, you can tell this is a different team. Cal football just may surprise some people.
