The New York Football Giants kicked off their 9oth year of existence in the birthplace of football, Canton, Ohio. Tonight, the Giants and Buffalo Bills squared off in the 51st edition of football’s mid-summer classic, and the Giants prevailed, 17-13. Let’s take a look at how things went.
Hall of Fame Game
With a brand new offensive scheme and new faces everywhere you look, the Giants gave us a small taste of how things look. As is the case with all preseason games, you don’t really care about outcomes, so whatever gleaned now is taken with copious grains of salt. To wit…
Remember, These Games Don’t Count: And that’s good, because the first drive of the Giants season ended up in a familiar fashion as it did last year. On the second drive of the game, Eli Manning was flushed out of the pocket and while he was rolling to his left, he lost control of the ball. His gaffe lead to a Buffalo field goal. Some things, seemingly never do change.
ALL ABOARD THE ANDRE WILLIAMS BANDWAGON: Considering that the vibe over the subject of David Wilson does not seem very positive at all (NBC made sure that we knew that Wilson’s fate will likely be determined on Monday), Andre Williams seemed to clinch the backup/goal-line role already. He was clearly the most impressive player of the night.
Corey Washington Made a Huge Play, Too: Likely back-up Ryan Nassib hooked up with former Newberry College receiver with a nice bomb that allowed the 6’4″, 215-pound free-agent to make a play. Considering that the Giants don’t have many truly big receivers, Washington could be the kind of sleeper that Victor Cruz once was. He is a very intriguing prospect.
Up Next: The Giants host Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers at MetLife Stadium on Saturday, 7:30 PM.
