Many mixed martial arts fans around the world were wondering what mystery matchup that was going to take place at UFC 178 on September, 27th . The current rumor (still yet to be verified), is that current Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez (25-3) has possibly been signed to the UFC, and he’ll be fighting lightweight contender Donald Cerrone (24-6), who is on a hot streak of 4 wins in the last year, with all of them being finishes. Alvarez has only fought 3 times within the past 2 years and has not competed since November of 2013.
Many were wondering if the co-main event of UFC 178 was going to be Ronda Rousey vs Gina Carano because of all the recent rumors that were going on, but nobody expected the Cerrone vs Alvarez to take place. Khabib Nurmagomedov was supposed to fight Cerrone for a number 1 contender spot, but literally 20 minutes after he signed the agreement to fight Cerrone, he blew his knee out and wasn’t able to take the bout. A title shot is most likely at state for this bout and will fight the winner of the lightweight championship bout between Gilbert Melendez and Anthony Pettis who will fight this December.
The fighting styles of Cerrone and Alvarez are both action packed, and each of them have been “Fight Of The Year” candidates throughout their exciting careers. This bout will surely help this event sell faster and will be a great bout to watch before Jon Jones fights Daniel Cormier in the main event. This fight is a must see and has no possibility to be a boring fight. While at this point the matchup is purely speculation, I feel that if the UFC signs Eddie, it would be a spectacular move on their part, and there could not be a better opponent than Donald Cerrone for Alvarez’s first fight in the UFC.
