It’s official. Former UFC middleweight champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva will meet former Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz on January 31st in Las Vegas, Nevada at UFC 183.
Dana White broke the news to ESPN, and had the following to say via his twitter feed earlier today:
Lunch with the GOAT @spideranderson and just got the Diaz fight done!!!! #ufc #superfight http://t.co/AlR208fqr3
— Dana White (@danawhite) July 29, 2014
The bout will reportedly take place in the UFC middleweight division, in which Anderson Silva (33-6) still holds the number one spot in the official UFC rankings.
This bout will mark the return to the Octagon for both fighters, each coming back from extended layoffs, neither having fought in 2013. Silva’s last bout took place against Chris Weidman at UFC 168 in the biggest show of 2012, where he suffered a stomach-turning break of his left tibia and fibula due to a checked leg kick. Diaz (26-9, 1 NC) is coming off a decision loss to former Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre at UFC 158.
This is a bout hardcore fight fans have been asking about for years, and while some may say it comes a bit too late in their respective careers, many will argue its still right on time for a superfight.
