Fantasy Football Tight End Rankings

#15 Jared Cook

Year Age Team G REC Yrds TD Tar Fum Fum lost
2011 24 Ten 16 49 759 3 81 2 2
2012 25 Ten 13 44 523 4 72 1 1
2013 26 StL 16 51 671 5 86 1 1

St. Louis Rams TE Jared Cook stormed the gates in the opening week of 2013 (7 receptions, 141 yards, and 2 touchdowns) and had fantasy connoisseurs in a panic attack scrambling for the waiver wire. After we removed our sweat soaked shirts we waited for another brilliant performance. And waited, and waited… Ultimately he cooked up three other serviceable-to-startable games and befuddled fantasy fans by the dozen.  The most frustrating thing about this Rams prospect is his ridiculous combination of size and speed; the caveat is his stone hands and happy feet. These two flags keep him in TE2 limbo.

#14 Ladarius Green

Year Age Team G REC Yrds TD Tar Fum Fum lost
2012 22 SD 4 4 56 0 4 0 0
2013 23 SD 16 17 376 3 30 0 0

With Antonio Gates slipping down to the #22 ranked TE, we believe that this is the year that Green steps into the role as the #1 targeted TE for the Chargers.  It would seem crazy to think that after Gates 113 targets, he would be ranked below Green. Here are the reasons: Gates is 34 years old, two TE sets are in vogue, his size and speed, and mostly this has been the Chargers plan since they drafted him. My advice on drafting Ladarius Green is to take him very late as a sleeper backup if you can afford the bench spot on him.

#13 Martellus Bennett

Year Age Team G REC Yrds TD Tar Fum Fum lost
2011 24 Dal 14 17 144 0 26 0 0
2012 25 NYG 16 55 626 5 90 0 0
2013 26 Chi 16 65 759 5 94 1 1

Martellus Bennett had a solid 2013, racking up 759 yards, ranking ninth in all tight ends, and scoring 5 touchdowns. Bennett offers a good compliment to receivers Brandon Marshall and Ashton Jeffery and offers a threat over the middle, giving Jay Cutler multiple options should teams decide to double cover either Marshall or Jeffery. The 2014 season should be even stronger for Bennett, as he is an important piece in Marc Tressman’s potent offense. Bennett is definitely a starting fantasy tight end and potentially a value pick as he could still be on a lot of draft boards into late rounds.

#12 Kyle Rudolph

Year Age Team G REC Yrds TD Tar Fum Fum lost
2011 21 Min 15 26 249 3 39 0 0
2012 22 Min 16 53 493 9 93 0 0
2013 23 Min 8 30 313 3 46 0 0

Things are looking up for Kyle Rudolph. If his production in the eight games he played in last year was projected over a whole regular season, he would have finished as the 11th ranked TE, and had his second consecutive 100 point year (according to NFL.com scoring). But what makes him a really interesting option with a lot of upside is the introduction of Norv Turner as offensive coordinator, under whom Antonio Gates, Randy McMichael and Jordan Cameron all had their best years. Despite a history of injuries and never putting up 500 yards in a season, Rudolph could become a very strong fantasy option if all goes as planned.

# 11 Charles Clay

Year Age Team G REC Yrds TD Tar Fum Fum lost
2011 24 Mia 14 16 233 3 25 0 0
2012 25 Mia 14 18 212 2 33 0 0
2013 26 Mia 16 69 759 6 102 0 0

Standing in at 6’ 3”, Charles Clay is considered as a smaller breed of TE. Clay has demonstrated the capability of taking the ball from the backfield and operates stunt run plays.  With a new offensive coordinator in tow, we might not be able to rely on the impromptu running plays and redzone effectiveness, but what we will do is assume that Mike Wallace is still a one trick pony, Brian Hartline is just another slot guy, and that rookie Jarvis Landry will have the typical NFL entry level production of a WR. Primed as a top 10 TE candidate, Clay should prove to QB Ryan Tannehill as a reliable option.
