Ben Davies: Spurs Strengthen Key Area Ahead of Season

Spurs have most definitely acquired a player very much skilled in the art of defending in Ben Davies (21), who recently signed alongside Michel Vorm (30) from fellow Premier League side Swansea City. The Welsh full back joins on a five-year deal with Netherlands goalkeeper Vorm agreeing a four-year contract with the club.

Consequently, it was quite evident that Tottenham were liable and struggled in the left back position last season which was mainly occupied by Danny Rose (a player who had beforehand impressed during his loan spell at Sunderland). Obviously encouraged by Rose’s impressive performances for the Black Cats, former Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas saw fit to bring him back into the Spurs fold making him his first choice left back, allowing current left-back at the time Benoit Assou-Ekotto to go out on loan and re-join former manager Harry Redknapp at QPR.

However, it was a decision that simply failed to pay off, with Rose being caught out on many occasions and being left responsible for a lot of Spurs’ defensive lapses. The new instalment to the team has most definitely excited many Tottenham fans as the left back position was certainly an area that needed to be strengthened and having now done so the starting 11 is beginning to look solid in all areas.

Ben Davies:

Davies initially made his first-team debut for Swansea City against West Ham United on the 25th off August 2012, coming on as an 84th minute substitute for Neil Taylor in a 3–0 home victory. Additionally, Davies soon became a regular starter for Swansea in the 2012–13 season following a long-term injury to first choice left back Neil Taylor and went on to become Swansea’s first choice left back. It’s also fair to note that Davies is 21 but has already won 10 Wales caps, meaning the full-back therefore arrives with a lot of confidence as well as experience for such a young player and is much more defensive minded which has left many saying he has ‘broken the modern mould’ as many full backs in the modern game tend to be very attacking.

“I had never thought or wanted to leave Swansea, but an opportunity like this doesn’t come up often in your career. Spurs were the ones chasing me from the beginning and joining the north London club was too good an opportunity to turn down” the Welshman spoke.

With the squad Tottenham already have and may well add to, and a manager who embraces such a positive style of play to the game, they must surely be up there challenging this campaign?
