Fabber’s Believe it or Not!
I am a good mix of very excited and extremely nervous. I feel like we all are before we do something different or new to us. This weekend, I will be running my first 5K ever. I am not sure how to feel about it.
I didn’t train as well as I should have for this event, but I did do some 1-2 mile runs leading up to this dreaded date. I looked at all the mistakes you can make, like going out too fast, not stretching well before and after, making sure you are hydrated , and setting your own pace. I looked at what are the best socks to wear and how many pairs are best for one’s body during a contest like this. If you know me like I think you do, you know I will have on something that will draw attention my way. I don’t do it to be the center of anything, but just so they know I am here and not hiding from the event. I also purchased some sweet running shoes that you might be able to see from the moon due to how bright they are.
I even changed my diet leading up to the race to make sure my body was in the best place it could be in. Do not get me wrong, I am still in pretty good shape. I play basketball a couple times a week, take a couple runs, do insanity work outs and play any sport under the sun if time permits. Since I have lived near the beach for the past couple years, I have gotten into beach volleyball as well (it’s addicting, so beware before you do it). I played sports for most of my life at some very competitive levels and have kept myself in descent enough shape to be able to handle this, hopefully.
I started to think that this is just like a fantasy draft. You prepare, you worry, and you stress. What can we do to take away some of the fear? Well, we prepare as much as we can before the day. Like I did with my shoes, socks, diet, and so on. LWOS has a great fantasy department and so do many other websites. So look up as much as you can: learn trends and average draft positions. Know some players you might want to target with certain picks and be prepared for something you don’t expect to happen. Some players will fall in the draft and some will go early. It’s okay. The draft will go on and you will form a team, and with it, a chance.
Have confidence and believe that you got this. The rest will all work itself out. Here are some things you should know about last year to help you figure out how you want to play this year.
10 Fantasy Need to Knows Before Drafting
1) Last year the quarterback held the best true value of any position. That is true, but in the last 12 years the running back has earned that spot in 10 of them. This year looks like a running back year.
2) Last year the difference between the highest ranking quarterback and the 12th ranked quarterback was 15 points per game. How many more games would you have won if you got those points? Every pick matters.
3) Last year the tight end position was the most overvalued in the NFL. The 1st and 12th ranked tight ends only had an 8.4 point differential, which is only 0.4 higher than the fantasy defense differential last year.
4) Chill with the kicker is important talk. There was only a 3 point per game difference between the 1st and 12th ranked kicker. Leave them for last.
5) Save roster spots. You do not need a backup kicker, defense, tight end, and even quarterback in some situations. Stack up on running backs and wide receivers!
6) More depth means more options for injuries that will happen and players to combine to make a trade that will go down in history.
7) The importance of defense in fantasy football keeps growing. Last year, the defense was only a point away from the true value of wide receiver and less than that from tight end.
8) We haven’t had a back-to-back scoring leader in the running back position in almost a decade. That’s why it’s a safe bet that Jamaal Charles should not be drafted first this year.
9) It has been even longer for a defense to repeat at the top of the chart. So go ahead and draft Seattle’s defense with your 8th round pick. They might finish second.
10) Go for studs early and often. Don’t take the next great thing until after round six. I know it’s hard, but choose safe picks early and high-risk, high-reward picks later on. You cannot win a fantasy league in the first few rounds of the draft, but you sure can lose it.
