John Cena could have selected anyone on the main roster to face him at Summerslam for his WWE Championship. While many pleaded their case, even Heath Slater who was celebrating his birthday that night, Cena went with crowd favorite Daniel Bryan. As he skipped to the ring, enticing the crowd to chant his infamous “YES!” catchphrase. The show went off the air with Daniel Bryan yelling “YES!” repeatedly while getting into the face of Cena.
This was one year ago. July 15th, 2013. An entire calendar year later, some things haven’t changed.
Monday Night Raw July 14th 2014 vs July 15th 2013
John Cena is still the WWE Champion, only now it goes by the fancier title of WWE World Heavyweight Champion and Cena has to drag 40 pounds of gold instead of the usual 20 pounds. Cena also opened up the show that night, as he did this past week on Raw and as usual, he closed it too. While Randy Orton may not have been carrying the Money In The Bank briefcase this year like he did last, Seth Rollins, who is linked to Orton and the Authority, has that privilege.
And then there is Daniel Bryan. What a difference a year makes. From feuding against the Authority to winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Wrestlemania 30, Daniel Bryan went from being on top of the wrestling world to going through some of the hardest moments in his life. Just one month after winning the Championship, Bryan had to step aside to undergo neck surgery. This forced the company to vacate the Championship due to an inability to defend it. Later, it was revealed that Bryan would have to undergo shoulder surgery to repair some damage done in the past.
All that in just one year. What about Fandango? At this time one year ago, the Fandango persona wasn’t completely ruined yet and actually, the WWE took him seriously. In the opening segment, Fandango interrupted John Cena and Randy Orton during their throwdown of words to announce his interest in being the one that gets selected to face Cena. While both Cena and Orton had some fun with him, Fandango did seem to get the best of Orton once the fists started flying. The end result was a one-on-one match against Orton, which he inevitably lost. But the important thing is, he was involved in that match.
And what about now? He’s caught in a love triangle with Divas/back-up dancers Summer Rae and Layla, which has now seemed to include the likes of Dolph Ziggler. When we all expected him to do well after defeating Chris Jericho at Wrestlemania, Fandango’s downward spiral continues and looks to be a lost cause, as he watches both Layla and Summer Rae dance around Ziggler and give him a double kiss on the cheeks.
It’s like the saying goes; “The more things change, the more they stay the same.”
