The YMCA Capital City League held it’s first annual dunk and 3 point competitions Friday prior to the first round of the playoffs. As I have been writing for LWOS at each game, league commissioner, Derek Hannah, allowed me to judge the dunk competition.
3 Point Shooting Contest
Naz Long started off a solid night by winning the 3 point competition with a score of 24. It was the same format as the NBA All-Star Game uses with five racks of five balls, with the last shot being worth two points.
1st Round
1. Kale Abrahamson – 22
2. Matt Thomas – 20
3. Naz Long – 20
4. Jordan Johnson – 19
5. Clayton Custer – 16
6. Ore Arogundade – 15
7. Drake Fuller – 14
8. Jack Taylor – 9
Finals
1. Naz Long – 24
2. Jordan Johnson – 19
3. Kale Abrahamson – 16
4. Matt Thomas – 15
Dunk Competition
Judging the dunk competition was a dream come true. We saw a variety of dunks, maybe the most impressive being Kourtlin Jackson hopping over a 6’6 body for a slam in the first round. In the end, Kourtlin was taken down by Dustin Hogue.
1st Round (2 dunks)
1. Kourtlin Jackson 50 + 46 = 96
2. Ore Arogundade 50 + 46 = 96
3. Dustin Hogue 46 + 48 = 94
4. Abdel Nader 43 + 48 = 91
5. Scott Bruxvoort 45 + 44 = 91
Finals
1. Dustin Hogue – 50
2. Kourtlin Jackson – 46
3. Ore Arogundade – 36
YMCA Capital City League Playoffs: Round 1
Playoffs Game 1: #6 Phoenix Renewable Resources (4-5) 122, #3 Renaissance Granite (4-5) 118
Phoenix once again upset the Renaissance Granite squad, but with one little asterisk. No Georges Niang. This time, Niang was at Lebron James’ skill camp and unfortunately had to miss the game. Although, the rest of the team didn’t go down without a fight.
It was as if Kourtlin Jackson was on a mission as he went for 50 points and 13 rebounds on the night. The next time we’ll see him won’t be until Iowa State’s first game this season.
Jackson, a walk on, has earned a lot of respect from YCCL and Iowa State fans and it will be interesting to see what he will do. Jackson told LWOS that any playing time he gets is valued.
As for the Iowa State guys on the opposite side of the ball, Naz Long scored a quiet 31 points while Daniel Edozie had 32 charging his way through the lane.
Playoffs Game 2: #5 Coca Cola Bottling Company (4-5) 120, #4 Capital Orthopedics (3-6) 113
Capital Orthopedics was heavily favored in this matchup, but fell behind early and played catch up for the rest of the night.
Despite having four players score 25+ points in the game, the comeback could not be completed.
Coca Cola was lead by Jordan Daniels, who tallied 30, and Dustin Hogue with 33 points. Hogue’s presence was also felt in the lane along with how fast he is.
