Welcome back to “NFL’s Believe It or Not.” This week, I will focus on controversial comments from Norv Turner, Taiwan Jones, and Chris Johnson.
Norv Turner
I will start with Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Norv Turner, who discussed the quarterback situation in Minnesota, saying, “We’ve got a really, really good group.” Even if you took the strengths of Matt Cassel, Teddy Bridgewater, and Christian Ponder, I’m not sure that you would have a good quarterback. Teddy Bridgewater hasn’t had the opportunity to prove himself on the field yet, so he has a pass for now, but Matt Cassel and Christian Ponder are simply not good quarterbacks. Saying that these three quarterbacks form a good group of quarterbacks is absurd. In fact, the Vikings arguably have the worst group of quarterbacks in the NFL. Only a few teams like the Jaguars, Raiders, or Texans fall into a similar category. Perhaps Norv Turner has forgotten that Philip Rivers is no longer his quarterback. The Vikings will definitely have an interesting quarterback battle during training camp, but that is only because none of these quarterbacks have much talent.
Taiwan Jones
Next up, Oakland Raiders special teamer Taiwan Jones discussed the Raiders’ playoff chances, saying, “I truly believe that it’s different here. When you have veterans that have been in the game a long time and that have been able to accomplish the goals that we’re trying to accomplish this year, it definitely feels good because you get to see and hear advice from those guys and hear them say that we’re close and that it’s possible.” Did Taiwan Jones watch Matt Schaub play with the Texans last season? Schaub certainly didn’t look like a quarterback that could lead a team to the playoffs. Schaub lead the Texans to two wins in the miserable AFC South. Playing the Broncos, Chargers, and Chiefs twice won’t help the Raiders either. In fact, the Raiders have one of the most difficult schedules in the NFL overall. Even if they do improve drastically from their four win season last year, they will be lucky to finish third in the division this year. Schaub won’t get much help from his receivers either, as the Raiders neglected to draft or acquire a #1 wide receiver. Perhaps Schaub will throw even more than 14 interceptions in 10 games before he is benched.
Chris Johnson
Finally, New York Jets running back Chris Johnson discussed Johnny Manziel’s offseason partying, saying, “Do what you got to do. It’s the offseason. That’s when you get time to do whatever you want to do and live your life.” These statements are absolutely true. Players never get in trouble during the offseason. Josh Gordon probably thought this was a good idea too. Now he won’t be able to play this season and he will lose one of the few prime years every player has. The offseason is absolutely a time to relax, but living dangerously and doing “whatever you want to” is not acceptable. Countless players senselessly jeopardize their careers every single year because they act recklessly during the offseason. Next time Johnny Manziel is preparing to snort cocaine, he should make sure that nobody is taking pictures.
