Free agent forward Dany Heatley signed a one-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks today. The deal is reportedly for $1 million.
Heatley, 33, played the final three seasons of his 6-year, $45 million contract with the Minnesota Wild. Originally signing that deal with the Ottawa Senators, he was traded to the San Jose Sharks per his request. After two seasons in California, Heatley was traded to the Minnesota Wild where his final days saw him being a healthy scratch for the first time in his career. Heatley put up just 12 goals and 28 points in 76 games during his final season with the Wild.
Speculation began to circulate that Heatley may have to look abroad if he wanted to continue his hockey career, with injuries piling on and a career that was plummeting by the season. (SIA Profile)
Heatley made $5 million last season.
In his career, Heatley has played a career 863 games in the NHL and has recorded 791 points (372 goals, 419 assists) playing for the Atlanta Thrashers, Ottawa Senators, San Jose Sharks and the Minnesota Wild. He has hit the 100-point mark twice in his career, both times with the Senators. Heatley also has a Gold medal for his participation in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, along with 8 other medals in various IIHF Championship tournaments.
Heatley gets a fresh start to try and regain his goal scoring form, and for the money he will make it doesn’t seem like that big of a risk for his new club. Only time will tell though if this deal will pay off in the long run.
