Orlando Magic, Channing Frye Agree to Four-Year, $32 Million Deal

Free agent power forward and former Phoenix Sun Channing Frye has agreed to sign a four-year, $32 million deal with the Orlando Magic, according to several reports.  First with the news was Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports.

While many didn’t expect the 6’11” Frye to get much on the open market at 31-years-old, the deal comes as no huge surprise in a league in which big men are routinely overpaid.

Frye, who was the 8th overall pick in the 2005 NBA draft, has played for the Suns since they signed him as a free agent before the 2010-11 season. After being diagnosed with an enlarged heart, he was forced to miss the entire 2012-13 season. Frye proved his value in strong comeback last season, however, averaging 11.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 0.8 blocks while playing in all 82 games. (SIA Profile)

Channing Frye became an unrestricted free agent after opting out of the final year of what was originally a five-year, $30 million contract with the Suns. The final year would have paid him $6.8 million. The Suns had expressed interest in re-signing him, but it appears that they were unable to match the offer coming out of Orlando.

Channing Frye will join rookie forward and fourth overall draft pick Aaron Gordon in Orlando, and help give the Magic the ability to stretch the floor with his consistent three-point shooting ability, as he is a career 38.5% three-point shooter.  He should also be able to add some rebounding, and some experience to the young club.
