In a move that has long been expected, Boris Diaw has reportedly reached an agreement with the San Antonio Spurs on a new three-year contract. It is believed that this contract is worth $22.5 million. Diaw, who has spent the last three seasons with San Antonio and was an unrestricted free agent this off-season, took to Twitter and Instagram to break the news of his signing:
Hey spurs fans,
Good news i stay in san antonio for a few more years. Lets win it again #gospursgo http://t.co/dqkftfLuN1
— Boris Diaw (@theborisdiaw) July 6, 2014
Boris Diaw was a key piece to the bench of an Spurs team that won the NBA finals in very convincing fashion last month, beating the Miami Heat in five games. He averaged 9.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.8 assists while playing 25 minutes per game last season. The 32-year-old power forward will get a reasonable pay raise from the $4.7 million he made last year, and he was likely never even considering testing his value on the open market. Diaw has always made it clear that his desire to stay with the team.
In bringing Boris Diaw back, the San Antonio Spurs are one step closer to bringing their entire 2014 NBA Championship winning roster back for another season. The team is also looking to add another piece in pursuit of yet another championship and can use their mid-level exception to do so. The Spurs are rumored to be targeting Los Angeles Lakers free agent forward Pau Gasol with the exemption.
