Milan Michalek Re-signs With Senators

As it turns out, Milan Michalek wasn’t so interested in what was available in free agency, as he re-signed with the Ottawa Senators to a 3-year, $12 million deal.

The 29-year-old Michalek has struggled with injuries in the past, but played a full 82 games last season with the Sens and potted 17 goals and 39 points. It was a down season for a winger capable of netting around 25 goals and 60 points, so taking a bit of a pay cut from his previous $4.3 million salary isn’t much of a surprise.

Michalek has spent the last five seasons in Ottawa, after coming over from the San Jose Sharks in 2009. While his production hasn’t always been what the Senators were looking for from Michalek (he had just one season of more than 40 points), he’s been a solid secondary scorer when healthy, and should continue that trend. He’ll continue to play a top-six role, and the Senators are hoping he can pick up some of the offense that they traded when Jason Spezza was dealt earlier in the day.
