The latest news out of the FIA’s all electric single seat racing series is two new driver announcements. As widely expected after driving the car at the initial roll out test at Donnigton park, former Formula 1 driver Nick Heidfeld, or ‘Quick Nick’ has been confirmed along with former Minardi F1 driver and Toyota LMP1 driver Stephane Sarrazin to drive for the Venturi Formula E team, co owned by actor Leonardo DiCaprio in the inaugural season of Formula E.
Nick Heidfeld provides a wealth of experience and expertise having started 183 Grand Prix, the last of which with the Lotus Renault F1 team in 2011. Up to now, he has been competing in the World Endurance Championship for Rebellion Racing in the privateer LMP1 class having finished fourth overall and first in class at this year’s 24 hour Le Mans.
The German will be partnered by Frenchman Sarrazin who competed in one Grand Prix for the Minardi F1 team in 1999. Since then he has honed his expertise also in the WEC, formerly competing for Peugeot and as of 2013, joining Toyota Racing full time as a driver of the Toyota TS030 competing in the LMP1 class. He helped the team finish 2nd at Le Mans and scored his first win with the team in Bahrain. He continues with them this year.
This now reduces the amount of cockpit vacancies down to 10, with 1 space to fill in the Andretti AutoSport and Trulli GP cars while China Racing, Dragon Racing, e.dams and the Super Aguri Formula E teams are all yet to confirm their line ups for this fascinating and increasingly popular racing series which properly kicks off at the first pre season test at Donnigton Park on Thursday. Therefore we can assume that all the reaming drivers will be announced in the build up to then.
