Hurricanes Name Bill Peters Head Coach

The Carolina Hurricanes announced former Detroit Red Wings assistant coach Bill Peters as the team’s new head coach. The announcement was made via the team’s twitter account and Peters will be formally introduced to the media in a press conference with president of hockey operations and general manager Ron Francis on Friday.

Peters has been an assistant coach with the Red Wings for the last three years. Prior to that Rockford spent three seasons as the head coach of the Rockford Ice Hogs in the AHL. He has risen through the coaching ranks also spending three seasons as the head coach of the Spokane Chiefs, and leading them to the Memorial Cup in 2008, and three seasons as the head coach of the University of Lethbridge. He started his coaching career as an assistant in Spokane, under current Red Wings coach Mike Babcock. Peters also worked as head coach of Team Canada at the 2008 Under 18 World Championships.

During his time as head coach in Rockford, Peters team had a 122-97-21 record. He led the IceHogs to Calder Cup playoff appearances in 2008-09 and 2009-10, accumulating at least 40 wins in each of those seasons.

In Detroit Peters primary responsibilities were working with the defencemen and coaching the team’s penalty killing units.

Francis will introduce Peters during a news conference on Friday at noon in PNC Arena’s Varsity Club. Peters becomes the 13th head coach in the history of the franchise, replacing Kirk Muller who was let go after the Hurricanes again failed to make the playoffs this past season.
