Big Surprises headline first night for YMCA Capital City League

It was an exciting first night of the YMCA Capital City League that brought many pleasant surprises for fans. Some big names had big nights while some were no shows and it all goes down in Central Iowa.

Game 1: Renaissance Granite (1-0) 96, Walnut Creek YMCA (0-1) 93

In game 1 between Renaissance Granite and YMCA, it wasn’t necessarily the Iowa State players who brought their A-Game. Reed Timmer (YMCA-Drake Fr.) tallied 20 points along with six rebounds in his YCCL Debut.

Jameel McKay (YMCA-Iowa State Jr.) scored the same number of points including a PUTBACK slam that got the crowd on their feet. His Iowa State teammate, Hallice Cooke did not play.

On the Renaissance Granite side, a big surprise of the night, Kourtlin Jackson (RG-Iowa State Walk on Jr.) had himself a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds.

Jackson certainly didn’t look like a walk on player and Fred Hoiberg (Iowa State’s Head Coach) redshirted him last season, so he could be utilized in 2014-15. Georges Niang (RG-Iowa State Jr.) put up 29 points on the way to a win for Renaissance Granite.

Game 2: Phoenix Renewable Resources (1-0) 108, Coca Cola Bottling Company (0-1) 105

The highest scoring game of the night started out with a big night from Naz Long. Long (PRR-Iowa State Jr.) went 7-20 on three pointers and 7-10 on field goals to complete a 40 point game.

Long looks to be even more impressive from the three point line this season after he had a very clutch season last year. Hitting two buzzer-beating, game-tying three pointers against Oklahoma State last season was a big reason for him to keep getting solid minutes.

While Long put on a show, Sherron Dorsey Walker (CCBC-Iowa State So.) and Dustin Hogue
(CCBC-Iowa State Sr.) combined for 49 points, but it proved to not be enough to comeback.

Game 3: Capital Orthopedics (1-0) 113, ADIO Chiropractic (0-1) 97

Area fans got their first look at one of Fred Hoiberg’s 2014 high school recruits when Clayton Custer (CO-Iowa State Fr.) took the floor on Sunday. Custer racked up 29 points and eight assists in his YMCA Capital City League Debut.

Abdel Nader, (CO-Iowa State Jr.) a transfer from Northern Illinois, started off his summer league season with a 26 point, 18 rebound double-double. Nader brings scoring experience from Northern Illinois and has already sat out a year from transferring.

On the other side of the court, two Drake players, Kale Abrahamson (ADIO-Drake)
And Dom Aducci (ADIO-Drake) combined for 45 points, but couldn’t tally enough rebounds to win. ADIO was without Iowa State’s Monte Morris and Matt Thomas. Morris is playing for the USA across seas right now while Matt Thomas recently received an OWI, but it was unknown why he wasn’t there.
