A summer basketball league in Central Iowa, located in a freshman high school gym, showcases old and new talent of Iowa State, Drake, and Universities in the area three times a week. Six teams are sponsored and named by local businesses and will compete in eight games leading into a two day playoff Tournament.
Team Renaissance Granite: The team with a big spotlight on Iowa State Junior, Georges Niang, who is questionable to be playing in the first few games because of an ankle injury he suffered in the NCAA Tournament. Jack Taylor, a former player at Grinnell College, adds an offensive aspect to the team. Taylor once scored 138 points in a game in college making national headlines.
Team Walnut Creek YMCA: Transfers from Iowa State will headline the YMCA team in Hallice Cooke and Jameel McKay. Cooke comes to Iowa from Oregon State and won’t be eligible until the 2015 season, giving the fans an inside look with the Capital City League. McKay however only has to wait half a season to get on the court with the Cyclones as he’ll be joining during conference play. Both are heavy targets down low and score in a heartbeat.
Team Coca Cola Bottling: Coca Cola features Senior Dustin Hogue out of Iowa State who provides a heavy offense and can shoot both the inside and the three pointers. The team features the oldest and youngest players in the league including local high school talent Sam Williams Jr.
Team Phoenix Renewable Resources: Ex Drake player Richard Carter will play one last year in the Summer League and has been at the top of the stats in past seasons. The team he ended up being on has won the league two years in a row. He’s joined by Iowa State 3 point threat, Naz Long, and big man, Daniel Edozie.
Team ADIO Chiropractic: The young guns in Matt Thomas and Monte Morris, who seem to be on the same team every year, will come together once more and provide a big 3 point threat. Joining them will be Kale Abrahamson, a transfer from Northwestern who’s heading to Drake. Abrahamson played in every game at Northwestern last season.
Team Capital Orthopedics: Iowa State transfer Abdel Nader will have his first year of eligibility at the university this season after turning eyes at Northern Illinois. The 6-6 forward will be joined by a highly anticipated high school recruit, Clayton Custer. Custer was voted the top player of his league in Kansas City.
