The Philadelphia Flyers have announced a one-year contract extension for veteran defenseman Kimmo Timonen Friday morning. Exact details on financial terms have not yet been disclosed by the team. Timonen was slated to become an unrestricted free agent next month.
In 77 games for the Flyers during their 2013-14 season, the 39-year-old recorded six goals and 29 assists for 35 points.
The upcoming 2014-15 campaign will mark his eighth season with Philadelphia. He was originally acquired from the Nashville Predators along with forward Scott Hartnell in exchange for the Predators’ first-round pick in the 2007 Entry Draft.
Over the course of his 1,092-game NHL career, Timonen has accumulated 117 goals and 454 assists for a total of 571 points. The Kuopio, Finland, native currently ranks third all-time among Flyers defensemen in assists with 232 and points with 270.
Throughout his last seven years with Philadelphia, he has won five Barry Ashbee trophies as the team’s best defenseman, including the previous three in a row.
The 5-foot-10, 194-pound blue liner has also made five Olympic appearances with Finland winning bronze medals in both 2010 and 2014.
