Chael Sonnen fails drug test, pulled from UFC 175

That’s right, Chael Sonnen has failed his second drug test during his tenure with the UFC. The substances found in his system were Anastrozole and Clomiphene. At the very wake of the TRT, Testosterone replacement therapy, Chael was the first and biggest fighter to be named in the debate. His failed drug test in 2010 made the sport into a frenzy with terms thrown around like TRT, Low-T, hypogonadism, which is the condition that results in low levels of testosterone, and drug testing as a whole. Many big name fighters were impacted in these type of drug debates, notably Wanderlei Silva and Vitor Belfort, coincidentally the other two fighters attached to this bout at UFC 175.

As we all know Chael and Wanderlei are coaches on a season of The Ultimate Fighter and were to meet at 175 this July. However, Silva pulled out of the fight because of his refusal to submit an NSAC random drug test. Which then saw Vitor Belfort, who was mysteriously removed from his title fight back in May vs Chris Weidman and recently admitted that he failed his drug test due to high levels of testosterone, step in and take the fight on relatively short notice. Now with Chael failing a test and facing a suspension, Vitor coming up on an NSAC hearing June 17th, and Silva refusing random drug tests, it creates quite the stir in the world of UFC. These are three big name fighters that are all falling under scrutiny for illegal substances, two being their second time.

Chael will be addressing this failed drug test tonight and I’m sure we will hear from Dana White almost immediately afterwards or tomorrow. This could result in a one year suspension for Chael who has already served out two in the last 4 years. With the ban on TRT earlier in the year Chael has made it clear that if his body can’t take it then he may just retire instead of fighting with illegal or legal substances to find his balance. All eyes will be focused on the UFC’s reaction to these three fighters in the coming week and we’ll see if Vitor even has the chance to fight on June 17th when he goes in front of the commission and attempts to be granted a license in Nevada.
