What does the future hold for The Shield, now that it's over?

Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins shook the very foundation of the WWE when they made their debut 19 months ago, destroying a red-hot Ryback and showing the WWE Universe as well as the WWE that they meant business. This week, a near-two year run of domination and brutality, capped off by a clean sweep against Evolution at this year’s edition of Payback in a 3-on-3 no disqualification tag team elimination match, came to a shocking end.

At the top of the show, Triple H promised to bring down The Shield and claimed that he would not stop until the goal was achieved. Unfortunately for him, and for Evolution, Batista was not on the same page. As he brought up the fact that he was promised a laundry list of things upon his return and ultimately given nothing, he was quickly knocked back down to reality by Triple H, who reminded him that until they reached their goal of eliminating The Shield, Batista would get nothing. His answer? “I understand… and I quit.”

The end of Evolution? Not so fast. This IS the Cerebral Assassin we are talking about. Who better than Triple H to come up with a plan. A plan B, that is. At the end of the show, as The Shield celebrated their win over Evolution the night before, Triple H — equipped with a sledgehammer — and Randy Orton made their way out. In true Triple H fashion, he made it clear that he always had a Plan B. With those words echoing through the arena, Seth Rollins winded up the chair he had equipped himself with and hit Roman Reigns in the back.

The shock immediately followed. The crowd completely thrown off guard. Dean Ambrose, glossy-eyed, looked on in horror before taking a chair shot to the gut and a dozen-or-so shots to the back and stomach.

It was clear. Plan B was in full effect – Seth Rollins had betrayed his Shield partners and defected to Evolution.

With the dust now settled; what does this turn of events mean for Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose?

For Seth Rollins:
Think back to 2003 when Randy Orton joined Evolution. He was crowned the diamond in the rough, the one that would be molded by legends like Triple H and Ric Flair to become the future of the WWE. The end result? A four time World Heavyweight Champion and eight time WWE Champion. Just over a decade later, Seth Rollins has now taken that spot of the future of the company inside the Evolution stable. He has what the ring skills, the ability, the passion and a look that could sell, Seth Rollins has been set on a path to succeed and become this era`s Randy Orton.

For Roman Reigns:
The majority of the WWE Universe wondered when Reigns would get his push as a singles mega star. With a potential full break of The Shield, now is the time for Reigns to reach that goal. Like Rollins, he has the ring ability to put on a solid match, he has the mic ability to scare the crap out of you and the look that can intimidate God himself. It was believed that Reigns would be the one out of the three to make it big and be a future WWE Champion. Now is his time to become the future and battle Seth Rollins for his rightful place.

For Dean Ambrose:
For Dean, it seems like he has the hardest road of them all. He has the rare quality of being able to talk himself out of a paper bag. When you think of his intensity during promos, you think of Roddy Piper. Vicious, calculative and almost always on the ball, Ambrose is the closest thing to a loose canon since Brian Pillman pulled a gun on Stone Cold Steve Austin and nearly whipped out his Johnson in ECW. Where does this measure Ambrose? He’s obviously above the mid-card at this point — he just went on one of the longest runs as US Champion a short while ago — yet he seems to be a peg or two behind Rollins and Reigns in this storyline.

Only the future will share with us the details of where these three men go but with The Shield’s break-up come and gone, that future is a lot closer to being realized.
