Marussia Canadian GP Preview: maintaining 9th

Courtesy of lead driver Jules Bianchi, the Marussia F1 team scored their first ever points with a 9th place finish at Monaco two weeks ago. Ecstatic celebrations followed as a hectic race allowed for Bianchi to get the jump over cars that had retired further up the field and a fantastic yet controversial move on Caterham’s Kamui Kobayashi secured this, demoting their arch rivals to the bottom of the Constructors’ Championship, promoting them to 9th and above the Sauber F1 team as well.

However, it’s back down to earth for the Banbury based team as although Jules Bianchi says the car is feeling good and Max Chilton is consistently still finishing every race he has ever started in F1, the team is looking strong. Nevertheless, it’s likely Sauber will be ahead of them this weekend however; strong, faultless drivers mixed with a crazy race will leave Marussia as the first team to make gains with their pace generally stronger than Caterham.

Team principal John Booth says the next step is 8th place, and good on them. They are doing remarkably well with such little financial backing and a small workforce. Coupled with Russian super car maker Marussia becoming bankrupt, that 9th place might just secure them a little more money for the near future.

There is no doubt that the Montreal race track will expose low downforce teams weaknesses, but Marussia are looking good and will look to spring yet another surprise on the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve this weekend, and gain more championship points.
