Arsenal Modus Operandi: Le Professeur, Encore?

The Situation:

Not so long ago, Arsenal Football Club re-signed its manager, Arsene Wenger, to a new 3-year pact.  To say the move was met with optimism isn’t entirely accurate. It seems throngs of supporters have all but called for the Frenchman’s head on a platter with increasing regularity over the past several seasons as tension surrounding a dusty trophy cabinet was reaching a boiling point. Was everything then forgiven when a new piece of hardware in the form of third-best trophy The FA Cup was added to the historical club’s collection? Not exactly.

Some have either found reason to discredit the trophy, poking holes in its validity and pointing to a match against an incredibly weak opponent. Others can’t seem to get past the regular fourth place finishes the team has “enjoyed” over the past several seasons.  Yes, even some Arsenal “fans” are quick to join rivals in the mocking of the club. And to them, it’s all “Le Professeur’s” fault.

So, when the team announced the decision to keep Wenger at the club for another three seasons, can we step back and find reason to celebrate the decision despite the lean years?

The Decision:

Wenger announced three days ago that “I want to stay and to continue to develop the team and the club. We are entering a very exciting period. We have a strong squad, financial stability and huge support around the world. We are all determined to bring more success to this club.”  It is an exciting time, and the 64-year-old is a big reason why, despite the negativity from Twitter know-it-all’s. The deal will have him in his 19th season with the club, far more than any other manager currently employed in the Premier League.

The Verdict:

There are several reasons this extension needed to happen.

1. Wenger draws talent

2. Wenger is shrewd, yet finds value when needed

3. The team is very well rounded, only a few pieces away from challenging for the top trophies

Your Verdict:

Lil fann”’wenger @abbaadamufan: Awesome, Never doubted him.

Giroud’s Back Heel @PeteStefanowicz: If it’s his final contract I hope he goes all out to improve a side that’s not far off the title.
