2014 NBA Draft: Noah Vonleh Scouting Report

Noah Vonleh

Age: 18
Height: 6’9″
Weight: 247 lbs.
Position: Power Forward
School: Indiana
NBA Comparison: Wayman Tisdale

Strengths:

Has the size to play power forward in the NBA, while also boasting the skill set of a wing player. Has greatly improved his post game recently. Tremendous rebounder, offensively and defensively. Very quick and mobile for a player of his size. Good shooter who displays great shot selection. He has also shown ability to knock down shots from beyond the arc, rare for a power forward. Surprisingly excellent ball handler, combined with his range, could make him dangerous offensively. His length and height make him a shot-blocking force. Not a bad free throw shooter, making 71.3% from the charity stripe as a freshman. He will only be 19 years old as a rookie. Work ethic is not a concern, as he has always shown a passion for the game and a will to get better.

Weaknesses:

May have a harder time transitioning to the pro game due to his inexperience and youth. Despite his tremendous offensive potential and skill set, he didn’t take enough shots during his freshman season, leading some to believe confidence may be an issue. Often relies on his massive physical frame rather than pure athleticism. Not to get better in the low post. Still not used to playing at the 4 spot rather than at the wing. Sometimes overthinks situations rather than reacting instinctively. Offensive and defensive awareness is a concern. He turns the ball over way to much due to his lack of court awareness. Often finds himself in foul trouble.

Verdict:

Vonleh has the size and skill set to develop into a legitimate scoring threat, but needs to develop the killer mentality and become more confident in his shot. A hard worker with an obvious passion for the game, Vonleh could become an all-star, but will need time to adjust. Noah is a locked-in lottery pick, and will likely be taken in the top 10 of the 2014 NBA draft.
