For me, the 2007-08 Wasps season was the most memorable to witness. Being Lawrence Dallaglio’s last season of his professional career, the team knew they had to deliver.
The team didn’t get off to the greatest of starts having lost 3 games and drew another in the first four of the season. But as the games were played and the 2007 World Cup came and went, London Wasps seemed to be unbeatable.
Of course during the World Cup, the team was well represented with the likes of Lawrence Dallaglio, Tom Rees, Simon Shaw, Joe Worsley, Phil Vickery, Josh Lewsey and Paul Sakey in France playing with England. With the more experienced players missing from the starting XV, it was beginning to look a bit dim. But as the rounds in the Premiership went on, Wasps were proving to be one of the top teams in England.
When the world cup finished Dallaglio channeled the hurt and the anger of loosing in the final into making sure that his outstanding leadership would bring them into the premiership final.
Towards the end of the domestic season it was clear that London Wasps had the final on their minds. The last couple of matches proved that with big wins: 49-12 against Worcester, 40-29 against Saracens, and 45-28 against Leeds Carnegie. Despite only finishing second in the table they went on to beat Bath in the semi final and then to go on and meet their old rivals Leicester Tigers in the final.
Any fan of the Premiership knows what a hard task it is to beat Leicester Tigers most years, yet London Wasps managed to find that special formula that was needed for the task in the most important game of the season. When the final whistle blew, the coaching staff and the rest of the players knew what they had accomplished–winning the premiership for Lawrence. They had trophy in-hand, ready to be taken to its new home.
