The New Jersey Devils have announced the re-signing of veteran defenseman Marek Zidlicky to a one-year contract on Tuesday. Financial numbers were not released, but CBCSports is reporting that the deal is for $4 million, while TSN is reporting the deal is for $3 million.
Last year Zidlicky’s contract called for $3 million in base salary and $1 million in bonuses according to cap geek.
The 37-year-old offensive blue liner was slated to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 but instead opted to stay in New Jersey for what will be his fourth season with the team.
Zidlicky finished the 2013-14 year with 12 goals and 30 assists for a combined 42 points in 81 contests. He led all Devils defensemen in goals and points as well as the entire team in power-play goals with 8 and power-play points with 18.
In his 11 career seasons in the NHL, Zidlicky has accumulated 78 goals and 289 assists for a total of 367 points in 699 games. He has also racked up 604 penalty minutes over the course of that time.
Since entering the league in the 2003-04 campaign with the Nashville Predators, he finds himself ranked 12th in games played, 15th in goals, tied for ninth in assists, and 11th in points.
The Most, Czech Republic, native was acquired by the Devils in a trade from the Minnesota Wild in February of 2012. He has represented his country in three Winter Olympics, six World Championships, two World Junior Championships, and the 2004 World Cup. He won a bronze medal at the Turin Olympics, and has a Gold and Bronze in World Championship play.
