Scrummage: Rory Underwood and other Stars Explain Rugby – Wingers

“Scrummage” is the end product of a blend of final year journalism portfolio and a will to help new rugby fans understand the positions of the game. Having played as a tight-head prop for my Universities 1st team it was great how much people wanted to talk to rugby players and yet when I attempted to explain what it was a prop did you could see the look of confusion slide across their face.

So what I did was create a series of video containing some of the biggest names in world rugby to help describe and explain the various positions of Rugby Union. Each episode covers aspects such as training, diet, injury prevention, the difference between two positions of the same name (such as the number 4 & 5 lock) and then end with who the professionals think is the best player in the world at their position.

To start, we have the series opening concentrating on the two wingers (numbers 11 & 14) and to do this we have with us:

Rory Underwood MBE

Winger, Leicester Tigers, England & British and Irish Lions
England’s record try scorer with a huge 49 try’s for his country. Appearing over 250 times for his club Leicester he was also part of 3 world cup squads and toured with the infamous British and Irish Lions on 2 occasions in 1989 and 1993

Mark Cueto

Winger, Sale Sharks, England & British and Irish Lions
The record try scorer in the Aviva Premiership and also having played his entire career at Sale Sharks he is possibly most famous for having a try disallowed in the 2007 RWC final against South Africa, a try that may have turned the tide of the game in England’s favour. He also toured with the British and Irish Lions during the 2005 tour led by world cup winning coach Sir Clive Woodward.

George North

Winger, Northampton Saints, Wales & British and Irish Lions
One of the upcoming superstars of the rugby world, North rose to fame during the successful 2013 British and Irish Lions tour to Australia in which he ended the series as the highest test try scorer for the Lions. He also has an amazing score rate for his National team Wales, scoring a try in every other game he has been capped

Topsy Ojo

Winger, London Irish & England
Capped twice by England, he made his international debut in 2008 with style scoring a full pitch length try after intercepting a pass from All Black legend Dan Carter. He has made over 200 appearances for club side London Irish since breaking into the starting XV in 2005

Sailosi Tagicakibau

Winger, London Irish & Samoa
Having being capped over 20 times for Samoa and appearing over 150 times for London Irish the largely built winger has a good sporting back ground having tried several different sport in school including basketball, athletics and rugby union.
