Another Minor League player is set to get his big break, coming up to the Major League level. Oscar Taveras, a center fielder in the St Louis Cardinals’ organization is set to be brought up to play with the Cardinals.
This move is coming from the Cardinals due to the extreme lack of production from Peter Bourjos, their current CF. Bourjos had his 2nd consecutive 0-4 game at the plate, and that dropped his batting average to .210 on the season. Taveras currently has a .325 batting average with a .373 on-base percentage at the triple-A level, and is one of the elite prospects in all of baseball. This transaction will put a lot of pressure on Bourjos, as Taveras will likely get some playing time. The more Bourjos struggles, the more Taveras will play over him.
Taveras certainly has the potential to be a starting outfielder on an MLB team, as his stats in the minors are very impressive and he is regarded as one of the best in the minors at this time. With Bourjos struggling mightily at the plate right now, this could be Taveras’ big break to make a name for himself in the show.
Taveras is a special talent, and his path to success in the majors is about to start as soon as the Cards make the call-up official.
By waiting until two months of the season have gone by the Cardinals avoid Taveras accumulating a year of service time which will keep him under team control and delay his eligibility for arbitration for one extra season.
